Why is this important?
Climate change and environmental degradation are exacerbating humanitarian needs.
At the same time, budget cuts are jeopardising environmental assessment tools such as NEAT+.
Without these tools:
- environmental risks remain unseen;
- humanitarian projects lose their ecological sustainability;
- costs rise over time;
- years of investment and expertise are lost.
What is NEAT+?
The Nexus Environmental Assessment Tool (NEAT+) is the most widely used rapid environmental assessment tool in humanitarian action. It helps humanitarian organisations to:
- identify environmental risks at an early stage;
- improve project quality;
- uphold the “Do no harm (to the environment)” principle;
- strengthen donor accountability;
- make better project decisions.
Our key calls
We call on donors and policy-makers to:
- ensure dedicated, multi-year funding for NEAT+;
- recognise environmental assessment as essential humanitarian infrastructure;
- support the tool’s ongoing governance and technical development;
- prevent the fragmentation of environmental assessment approaches.
