Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or the carbon intensity of its activities? REH, April 2025

Published on 8 April 2025

Since 2020, more and more international solidarity organizations have been seeking to reduce their environmental footprint, particularly their carbon footprint. Fifteen of them have signed the Statement of Commitment led by the Humanitarian Environment Network, which aims to reduce their GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to a reference year to be defined.

After almost five years of sustained efforts, reflection, and discussion among NGOs on decarbonization targets, the choice on how to measure the reduction – in absolute terms or relative terms – has emerged as a strategic and moral issue.

The fact sheet produced by the REH Carbon Working Group opens this discussion and offers some ideas to inform the decision.
