In 2020, DG ECHO adopted an ambitious approach to reducing the environmental footprint of humanitarian aid. To contribute to the mainstreaming of the environmental approach across EU funded humanitarian operations in the field, the expert will be appointed to the post of humanitarian Technical Assistant, Thematic Expert (TE) ‘Environmental Resilience and Climate change’ by the European Commission’s Directorate General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations – (DG ECHO).
The environmental resilience and climate Change Thematic expert will support DG ECHO HQ policy and geographical units in the implementation of DG ECHO’s approach to reducing the environmental footprint of humanitarian aid, including roll-out of the Minimum Environmental Requirements. The expert will provide field expertise on the integration of environmental considerations in humanitarian aid in all regions where ECHO operates i.e. worldwide.
The expert will contribute to the design and provide guidance to operational teams on how to integrate this area of expertise in DG ECHO operations, through funding of environmentally friendly projects or mainstreaming of such components in humanitarian programming. In this role, the environment expert will be required to carry out missions to identify and assess humanitarian needs and environmental risks, to monitor DG ECHO financed programmes in the domain and provide support to country teams and partners in this area. The expert will be called upon to contribute to strengthening relations with strategic partners notably by providing feedback on partners’ own strategies/policies in the area of Environmental Resilience.
At the request of DG ECHO Headquarters, the expert may also be called upon to carry out missions linked to responsibilities of a thematic expert to regions where DG ECHO operates or to Brussels and should be prepared to react to a current or evolving crisis in any region in the world following a request by DG ECHO Brussels.
